RUTZ

Narrative-driven work interwoven with comedic angst, an interest in the Anthropocene, and an attention to motion.
✦ Can you tell me anything about yourself?
Beginning in Florida, I took inspiration to paint from my grandmother and father. After attending art school, I moved to Seattle, WA where I worked on murals and continued to develop my practice while obtaining a masters in Landscape Architecture. I'm inspired by the way design and systems are related to the human experience. When I'm not working on art, you can find me on aimless walks around the city, collecting found objects, or perfecting my Italian!
✦ Are you open to commissions?
✦ Do you do tattoo designs?
✦ Do you sell prints?
Yes! Please reach out to my email to inquire.

RUTZ was born in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, along the coast. She grew up with a large collection of comics, plants, and vintage dolls, which often inspire her paintings. She began working in her current style early, often drawing characters with large eyes and elongated limbs, a style that emerges in her work today. Some inspirations that still find their way into her art are music from Queens of the Stone Age, Sade, and the Beatles as well as shows such as Flap Jack and Courage the Cowardly Dog. RUTZ’s art continued with an interest in graffiti art along with the lowbrow style popularized in Los Angeles sparked a style of work embedded in her practice. During her time at the University of Florida, she obtained a degree in fine art, giving her the concrete skills to accompany her natural style. RUTZ began showcasing her work professionally, even making her debut solo show in her own home where she shoved all her furniture into her bedroom to make space for the work. The show lasted two days and housed over 70 people. RUTZ has since exhibited in Seattle, London, and Italy. After receiving her masters in landscape architecture from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, RUTZ moved to Rome, Italy in pursuit of a complete life of art (and perhaps more pasta). She currently resides within the art filled, beautifully chaotic city of Rome where she continues to produce new paintings and drawings. RUTZ’s work often explores the Anthropocene, a defined period of human influence in the span of Earth's lifetime, and its relationship to the human experience. Her surrealist and pop inspired figures tell a story of the deep insecurities of being human, along with the humor of existence.
